PORTABLE SANDERS AND POLISHERS : PURPOSE AND TYPES

Portable sanders and polishers are used for surface finishing of materials such as metal, wood, ceramics, and plastics. Both tools are Lightweight and fairly easy cooperate.

They can be powered electrically or pneumatically and can be light-duty or heavy duty.

Portable sanders are used to remove paint, rust, corrosion, and imperfections from the surface of workplaces to produce a smooth surface for finishing. Field and machine shop maintenance personnel use the disk-type portable sander (Figure 1). The disk-type portable sander has a high-speed motor that rotates an abrasive disk, wire wheel, or a grinding wheel to prepare a surface for finishing. For sanding, a disk of abrasive paper is mounted with a flexible backing pad on the motor spindle (Figure 2). The basic motor unit is similar to the motor unit used for angle grinding, but with sanding there is no need for a wheel guard. On some models the motor spindle can be locked by depressing a lock button to install or remove the sanding disks. A side handle on the motor housing is used to support the sander during operation. This handle can be removed and screwed into the opposite side of the motor housing for left-handed operation. Pneumatic sanders have an advantage over electric sanders because they are lighter in weight and easier to handle which usually produces a better finished product.

NOTE: Portable sanders are not intended for use as portable abrasive cutoff saws. The torque for cut off sawing will ruin the soft gearing in the sander motor unit.

Various abrasive disks are used in the operation of the portable electric sander. These disks consist of different abrasive grains that have been bonded or glued onto a cloth or paper disk.

The backing material that supports the abrasive disk is made of a tough vulcanized rubber or fiber that can withstand hard use and constant flexing. Normally, the abrasive grain used on the disk is aluminum oxide, and the bonding agent is glue or special resin. Abrasive disks come in open-coat or closed-coat types, depending on the work to be performed.

The closed-coat disk has the abrasive grains bonded close together, while the open-coat disk has the abrasive grains spaced further apart. Open-coat abrasive disks are used for sanding soft materials that could possibly load up a closed coat disk, for example, wood sanding, removing paint and rust, and plastic. Closed-coat abrasive disks are used for sanding metal, finishing ceramics, and for smoothing rougher sanded areas.

Most portable sanders come with an instruction manual and those accessories that the manufacturer recommends for its use. These accessories can include a sanding setup which includes a flexible rubber backing plate, several types of sanding disks, and the hardware to secure the disk to the motor assembly. Other accessories may include flexible grinding disks with wheel guards, wire wheels, and odd shaped grinding cups with the appropriate wheel guard. Only use accessories approved by the manufacturer to avoid injury or damage to equipment.

The portable polisher (Figure 3) is used to produce a super finish or shine to the workpiece surface. Polishing or buffing a surface is desirable at times to increase smoothness and make the surface easier to clean. By polishing a surface, a workpiece can also be made more wear resistant. Portable polishers are generally more powerful than portable sanders since they encounter a greater frictional resistance when operation, portable polishers operate at slower speeds than in portable sanders so as not to mar the finished surface.

Pneumatic portable polishers are lighter in weight than electric models and may make fewer buffing marks on the finish. In order to improve the surface quality of a workpiece through polishing, it is necessary to use a soft bonnet or cover over the sander backing pad. Lamb's wool polishing bonnets are recommended with a soft rubber cushion pad separating the bonnet and the backing pad. Polishing compound, which is a mild abrasive, is used to help polish the surface. A left- or right-handed side handle is attached to the motor housing to help control the polisher during operations.

OPERATIONS WITH THE PORTABLE SANDER AND POLISHER

Operating the portable sander is difficult due to the rotating force of the disk, so the quality of the work depends mostly on the experience of the machine operator. Hold the portable sander so that the abrasive disk forms an angle of approximately 15° to the workpiece surface (Figure 4). Apply just enough pressure against the sander to bend the sanding pad and abrasive disk so that about 2 inches of the disk contact the surface. Move the sander from side to side, overlapping each path with the next. If the sander cuts irregularly or is hard to control, the sander is most likely at an angle less than the required 15° to the workpiece. If the sander gouges or leaves rough edges, the angle formed by the sander is most likely too great. When the sander is operating, keep it moving back and forth across the workpiece or lift it free to avoid damaging the surface.

The portable polisher looks like the portable sander but it is built with a slower speed and high torque needed for polishing. Polishing is performed by placing the spinning lamb's wool polishing bonnet lightly against the workpiece and moving the polisher lightly back and forth while maintaining a light pressure on the workpiece. Avoid pressing down too hard, or the surface could get damaged. Use separate polishing bonnets for different polishing abrasives, glazes, or waxes. Reapply polishing compound as needed to keep a smooth finish.

 

 

LIJADORAS Y PULIDORAS PORTÁTILES : PROPÓSITO Y TIPOS

Las lijadoras y las pulidoras portátiles se utilizan para el acabado superficial de materiales tales como metal, madera, cerámica, y plásticos. Ambas herramientas son livianas y bastante maniobrables.

Pueden ser accionadas eléctricamente o neumáticamente y pueden ser de poca potencia o para gran demanda.

Las lijadoras portátiles se utilizan para quitar pintura, óxido, corrosión, e imperfecciones de la superficie de lugares de trabajo para producir una superficie lisa como terminación. El personal de mantenimiento de máquinas de taller o campo utiliza la lijadora portátil tipo disco (figura 1). La lijadora portátil tipo disco tiene un motor de alta velocidad que hace girar un disco abrasivo, un disco de alambre, o una rueda de abrasión para preparar una superficie para su terminación. Para lijado, un disco de esmeril se coloca con un soporte flexible de forro en el eje del motor (figura 2). La unidad de motor básica es similar a la unidad de motor usada para amoladora angular, pero con la lija no hay necesidad de un protector del disco. En algunos modelos el eje del motor puede ser trabado presionando un botón de bloqueo para instalar o para quitar los discos de lija. Una empuñadura lateral en el compartimento del motor es utilizada para soportar la lijadora durante la operación. Esta empuñadura se puede quitar y atornillar en el lado opuesto del compartimento del motor para operación a lado izquierdo. Las lijadoras neumáticas tienen una ventaja sobre las lijadoras eléctricas porque son más livianas en peso y más fáciles de maniobrar lo que produce generalmente un mejor producto final.

NOTA: Las lijadoras portátiles no están destinadas para su uso como sierras abrasivas portátiles de corte. El esfuerzo de torsión para el corte arruinará el delicado engranaje en la unidad de motor de la lijadora.

El disco de estructura cerrada tiene los granos abrasivos adheridos en forma cercana entre sí, mientras que el disco de estructura abierta tiene los granos abrasivos con espaciado mayor entre sí. Los discos abrasivos de estructura abierta se utilizan para desbastar materiales suaves que podrían saturar posiblemente un disco de estructura cerrada, por ejemplo, lijado de madera, remoción de pintura y óxido, y plástico. Los discos abrasivos de estructura cerrada se utilizan para lijar metal, cerámica de acabado, y para alisar áreas granuladas más ásperas.

La mayoría de las lijadoras portátiles vienen con un manual de instrucciones y esos accesorios que el fabricante recomiende para su uso. Estos accesorios pueden incluir un equipo de lijado que incluya una placa de apoyo de goma flexible, varios tipos de discos abrasivos, y el conjunto de dispositivos para asegurar el disco al montaje de motor. Otros accesorios pueden incluir discos de pulido flexibles con carcasa protectora de rueda, cepillos de alambre, y vasos de amolar con la carcasa protectora apropiada. La pulidora portátil (figura 3) se utiliza para producir un final o un brillo destacado a la superficie del objeto. El pulido o lustre de una superficie es deseable ocasionalmente para aumentar la suavidad y hacer la superficie más fácil de limpiar. Al pulir una superficie, un objeto se puede también hacer más resistente al desgaste. Las pulidoras portátiles son generalmente más poderosas que las lijadoras portátiles puesto que encuentran una mayor resistencia friccional durante la operación, las pulidoras portátiles funcionan a velocidades más reducidas que las lijadoras portátiles para no estropear la superficie acabada.

Las pulidoras portátiles neumáticas son más ligeras en peso que los modelos eléctricos y pueden hacer menos marcas de pulido en el acabado. Para mejorar la calidad superficial de un objeto con el pulido, es necesario utilizar una caperuza suave o una cubierta sobre el plato de lijar o pulir. Los platos de pulido en piel con lana de cordero se recomiendan con una almohadilla de goma suave que separe el plato y el cojín del forro. El compuesto de pulido, que es un abrasivo suave, se utiliza para ayudar al pulimento la superficie. Una empuñadura lateral de izquierda o derecha se fija al compartimento del motor para ayudar a controlar la pulidora durante las operaciones.

OPERACIONES CON LA LIJADORA Y LA PULIDORA PORTÁTILES

El funcionamiento de la lijadora portátil es difícil debido a la fuerza giratoria del disco, así que la calidad del trabajo depende sobre todo de la experiencia del maquinista. Sostenga la lijadora portátil de modo que el disco abrasivo forme un ángulo de aproximadamente 15° a la superficie del objeto de trabajo (figura 4). Aplique sólo la presión necesaria contra la lijadora para doblar la almohadilla para lijar y el disco abrasivo de modo que aproximadamente 2 pulgadas del disco entren en contacto con la superficie. Mueva la lijadora de lado a lado, sobrepasando cada trayectoria con la siguiente. Si la lijadora corta irregularmente o es difícil de controlar, lo más probable es que esté en un ángulo menor que 15° con respecto al objeto. Si la lijadora hace desgastes sin precisión o deja bordes ásperos, el ángulo formado por la lijadora es probablemente demasiado grande. Cuando la lijadora está funcionando, hágala moverse hacia adelante y hacia atrás a través del objeto de trabajo o levántela libremente para evitar dañar la superficie.

La pulidora portátil es parecida a la lijadora portátil pero se construye con una velocidad más reducida y un alto esfuerzo de torsión necesarios para pulir. El pulido es llevado a cabo colocando el plato de pulido con piel de lana de cordero, moviéndolo hacia adelante y hacia atrás mientras que se mantiene una presión ligera en el objeto de trabajo. Evite presionar demasiado, o la superficie podría terminar dañada. Use caperuzas de pulido separadas para diferentes abrasivos, esmaltes, o ceras de pulido. Vuelva a aplicar el compuesto de pulido según lo necesitado guardar un final parejo.

Application examples in automotive buffing & polishing

Buffing and polishing using wheels and 'compounds' is somewhat like using wet and dry sanding paper, only much faster. Instead of using 'elbow grease' you will be using the power and speed of an electric motor.

The edge, or face of the wheel is the 'sanding block', which carries a thin layer of 'compound' which is the sandpaper. Varying types of wheel are available, and the different grades of compound are scaled similar to sandpaper. The compounds are made from a wax substance which has the different abrasive powders added to it. When this hard block is applied to the edge of a spinning buffing wheel, the heat from the friction melts the wax, and both wax and abrasive are applied in a thin slick to the face of the wheel.

The objective of buffing and polishing is to make a rough surface into a smooth one and, of course, each work piece will be in a different condition, so will need different procedures. Imagine the surface magnified thousands of times, it will look like jagged mountains and valleys. By repeated abrasion, you are going to wear down those mountains until they are old, soft, rolling hills! Then they will not dissipate the light, but reflect it. It is the reflection that makes the buffed part appear shiny.

Ejemplos de aplicación en pulido y lustrado del automotor.

El pulido y lustrado usando discos y “compuestos” es similar a usar papel de lija húmedo y seco, sólo que mas rápido. En lugar de usar engrasadora usted estará usando la potencia y velocidad de un motor eléctrico.

El borde, o la cara del disco es el “bloque de pulido”, que contiene una fina capa de “compuesto” que es el papel de lija. Varios tipos de discos están disponibles, y los diferentes grados de compuestos son clasificados en forma similar al papel de lija. Los compuestos son hechos de una substancia parafinosa que tiene los diferentes polvos abrasivos agregados a la misma. Cuando este duro bloque es aplicado al borde del disco giratorio de pulido, el calor de la fricción funde la cera, y así cera y abrasivo son aplicados en un forma de película lustrosa a la cara del disco.

El objetivo del pulido y el lustrado es convertir a una superficie áspera en una superficie lisa y,  por supuesto,  cada pieza de trabajo estará en una condición diferente, por lo tanto necesitará diferentes procedimientos. Imagínese la superficie ampliada miles de veces, la misma se verá como montañas irregulares y valles. Por la abrasión repetida, usted desgastará estas montañas ¡ hasta que se vuelvan praderas viejas, suaves y de fácil desplazamiento!. Entonces las mismas no disiparan la luz, sino que por el contrario la reflejaran. Es la reflexión lo que hace que una superficie pulida se vea brillante.

The Brightex wheel

Brightex wheels are constructed from a type of material, impregnated with a fine abrasive powder. The resulting combination being very flexible, yet very aggressive.

Brightex wheels remove rust, paint, scratches, minor blemishes and old paint.

A 'featherlite' touch is required with these wheels, unlike an ordinary buffing wheel. Heavy pressure will result in premature wear of the wheel.

The blisters found in chrome plate, particularly on pot metal, can be flattened with this wheel. Substrates take on a satin or flat finish, which should then be buffed with Emery and a Sisal wheel, followed by White or Tripoli on a cotton wheel.

El disco Brightex

The sisal buffing wheel

Sisal is a slender, hard, cellular strand of fiber that has demonstrated its great strength and tough resiliency in the form of binder twine, cord & rope for many years. These qualities, along with its natural abrading and grease absorbing characteristics, provide an ideal buffing wheel fabric.

Sisal buffing wheels will provide both polishing and cutting action. They will remove stretcher strains, orange peel, polishing wheel grit lines, light die marks, etc.

Spiral sewn wheels are the workhorse of most buffing and polishing jobs. Because the ply's of cotton cloth are sewn together spirally, the wheel becomes much harder and more pressure can be exerted on it. This is especially useful when 'cutting' the metal. The faces of these wheels are pre-raked to accept compound immediately.

These wheels are dependable and long wearing.

The loose cotton wheel

The main purpose of a loose cotton wheel is to polish and cut in a similar manner to the Spiral sewn wheel, except that this wheel, not being tightly stitched together, will 'mush' or collapse, allowing the cotton to get into awkward places more easily. If you have an object with fine details and awkward crevices, then this is the wheel to use.
