ELECTRICIDAD DEL AUTOMÓVIL
INTRODUCCIÓN
Objetivo de aprendizaje: Identificar componentes de carga, arranque, encendido y circuito de accesorios, sus funciones y los procedimientos de mantenimiento. Identificar los tipos básicos de cableado del automóvil, los tipos de terminales, y los diagramas de cableado.
Los sistemas eléctricos en el equipo usado por la Armada están diseñados para realizar una variedad de funciones. El sistema eléctrico del automóvil contiene cinco circuitos eléctricos. Estos circuitos son los siguientes (fig. 2-1):
Circuito de carga
Circuito de arranque
Circuito de encendido
Circuito de iluminación
Circuito de accesorios
La corriente eléctrica y las señales de control deben ser entregadas a los dispositivos eléctricos de forma confiable y de manera segura para que las funciones del sistema eléctrico no estén alteradas o se vuelvan un peligro. Este objetivo se logra a través de un diseño cuidadoso del circuito, la selección de componentes adecuados, y la ubicación práctica de los equipos. Mediante un cuidadoso estudio de este capítulo y del capítulo siguiente, entenderá cómo estos circuitos funcionan y los ajustes y reparaciones necesarias para mantener los sistemas eléctricos en condiciones óptimas.

CIRCUITO DE CARGA
Objetivo de aprendizaje: Identificar los componentes del circuito de carga, sus funciones y los procedimientos de mantenimiento.
El sistema de carga realiza varias funciones, que son los siguientes:
El mismo recarga la batería después del arranque del motor o después del uso de accesorios eléctricos con el motor apagado.
Suministra toda la energía eléctrica para el vehículo cuando el motor está en marcha.
Debe variar la salida para satisfacer diferentes cargas eléctricas.
Proporciona una salida de voltaje que es ligeramente superior a la tensión de la batería.
Un circuito de carga típico se compone de lo siguiente:
- proporciona la corriente para energizar o excitar el alternador y ayuda en la estabilización inicial de salida del alternador.
O GENERADOR - usa energía mecánica (motor) para producir electricidad.
CORREA DEL ALTERNADOR - conecta el cigüeñal del motor con la polea de alternador / polea del generador para impulsar el alternador / generador.
- amperímetro, voltímetro o luz de advertencia para informar al operador de la condición de carga del sistema.
La batería de almacenamiento es el corazón del circuito de carga (fig. 2-2). Es un dispositivo electroquímico para producir y almacenar energía eléctrica. Una batería de vehículo tiene varias funciones importantes, que son como se indica a continuación:
Debe operar el motor de arranque, el sistema de encendido, sistema electrónico de inyección de combustible, y otros dispositivos eléctricos para el motor durante el arranque del motor y puesta en marcha.
Debe suministrar TODA la energía eléctrica para el vehículo cuando el motor no está en marcha.
Debe ayudar a proporcionar el sistema de carga eléctrica cuando las demandas actuales están por encima del límite de salida del sistema de carga.

Debe actuar como un condensador (estabilizador de voltaje) que suavice el flujo de corriente a través del sistema eléctrico.
Debe almacenar energía (electricidad) durante períodos prolongados.
El tipo de batería utilizada en equipos de automóviles, construcción y manejo de peso, es del tipo batería plomo-ácido de célula. Este tipo de batería produce electricidad de corriente continua (DC) que fluye en una sola dirección. Cuando la batería se está descargando (la corriente que fluye fuera de la batería), ésta cambia la energía química en energía eléctrica, con lo cual, libera la energía almacenada. Durante la carga (corriente que fluye hacia batería desde el sistema de carga), la energía eléctrica se convierte en energía química. La batería puede entonces almacenar energía hasta que el vehículo lo requiera.
CONSTRUCCIÓN DE LA BATERÍA
El acumulador tipo plomo-ácido de células está construido para soportar fuertes vibraciones, el frío, el calor del motor, los productos químicos corrosivos, la descarga de alta corriente, y los períodos prolongados sin uso. Para probar y reparar las baterías correctamente, usted debe entender la construcción de la batería. La construcción de una batería básica de plomo-ácido del tipo de célula es como sigue:

ELEMENTO DE BATERÍA -El elemento de batería se compone de placas negativas, placas positivas, separadores, y correas (fig. 2-3). El elemento encaja en un compartimento celular en la carcasa de la batería. La mayoría de las baterías de automóviles tienen seis elementos.

Cada compartimiento celular contiene dos tipos de placas de plomo químicamente activos, conocidos como placas positivas y negativas. Las placas de la batería son de marco de malla rígida recubiertas con plomo poroso. Estas placas están aisladas una de otra por separadores adecuados y se sumergen en una solución de ácido sulfúrico (electrolito).
Las placas negativas cargadas contienen plomo (Pb) esponjoso (poroso), que es de color gris. Las placas positivas cargadas contienen peróxido de plomo (PbO2) que tiene un color marrón chocolate. Estas sustancias se conocen como los materiales activos de las placas. El calcio o el antimonio se añaden normalmente al plomo para aumentar el rendimiento de la batería y para disminuir la formación de gases (vapores ácidos formados durante la reacción química). Dado que el plomo en las placas es poroso como una esponja, el ácido de la batería penetra fácilmente en el material. Esto ayuda a la reacción química y la producción de electricidad.
Las correas de plomo de la batería o conectores se extienden a lo largo de la parte superior de la carcasa para conectar las placas. Los terminales de la batería (terminales tipo borne o laterales ) están construidos como parte de un extremo de cada correa.
Para evitar que las placas se toquen entre sí provocando un cortocircuito, láminas de material aislante (caucho microporoso, fibra de vidrio, plástico o material impregnado), conocidos como separadores, se insertan entre las placas. Estos separadores son delgados y porosos de modo que el electrolito fluya fácilmente entre las placas. El lado del separador que se coloca contra la placa positiva está ranurado de modo que el gas que se forme durante la carga se eleve a la superficie más fácilmente. Estas ranuras también proporcionan espacio para cualquier material que se desprenda de las placas y caigan al espacio de los sedimentos debajo.
CARCASA DE LA BATERÍA, COBERTURA Y TAPAS.
La caja o carcasa de la batería está hecha de caucho duro o un plástico de alta calidad. La caja debe soportar la vibración extrema, cambios de temperatura, y la acción corrosiva del electrolito. Los tabiques separadores en la caja forman contenedores individuales para cada elemento. Un contenedor con su elemento es una célula.
Crestas o nervaduras rígidas son moldeadas en la parte inferior de la caja para formar un soporte para las placas y un depósito de sedimento para los desprendimientos de material activo que dejan las placas durante la vida de la batería. El sedimento se mantiene así alejado de las placas para no causar un corto circuito a través de las mismas.
La cubierta de la batería está hecha del mismo material que el contenedor, y está unida y sellada al recipiente. La cubierta ofrece aberturas para los dos bornes de la batería y una tapa para cada celda.
Las tapas de la batería ya sea que se enroscan, o van a presión en las aberturas de la tapa de la batería. Las tapas de la batería (tapones de ventilación) permiten que pueda escapar gas y evitar que el electrolito salpique fuera de la batería. También sirven como supresores de chispas (evitan que chispas o llamas enciendan los gases en el interior de la batería). La batería se llena a través de las aberturas de ventilación. Las baterías libres de mantenimiento tienen una cubierta de gran tamaño que no se desprende durante el servicio normal.
PRECAUCIÓN
El gas hidrógeno puede acumularse en la parte superior de una batería. Si este gas se expone a una llama o chispa, puede explotar.
TERMINALES DE BATERÍA
Los terminales de batería proporcionan un medio de conectar las placas de la batería al sistema eléctrico del vehículo. Pueden ser utilizados tanto dos bornes redondos como dos terminales laterales.
Los terminales de la batería son bornes redondos de metal que se extienden a través de la parte superior de la tapa de la batería. Estos sirven como conexiones de los extremos del cable de la batería. El borne positivo será más grande que el borne negativo. Este puede estar marcado con pintura de color rojo y un símbolo positivo (+). El borne negativo es más pequeño, pueden estar marcadas con pintura de color negro o verde, y tener un símbolo de valor negativo (-) sobre el mismo o cercano .
Los terminales laterales son conexiones eléctricas que están situadas en el lado de la batería. Estos tienen roscas internas que aceptan un tornillo especial en el extremo del cable de la batería. La polaridad del lado terminal se identifica por los símbolos positivo y negativo marcados en la caja.
ELECTROLITO
La solución de electrolito en una batería totalmente cargada es una solución de ácido sulfúrico concentrado en agua. Esta solución es de aproximadamente 60 por ciento de agua y aproximadamente 40 por ciento de ácido sulfúrico.
El electrolito de la batería de almacenamiento de plomo-ácido tiene una gravedad específica de 1,28, lo que significa que es 1,28 veces más pesado que el agua. La cantidad de ácido sulfúrico en el electrolito cambia con la cantidad de carga eléctrica; además la gravedad específica del electrolito cambia con la cantidad de carga eléctrica. Una batería totalmente cargada tendrá una gravedad específica de 1,28 a 80ºF (26,67ºC). La cifra subirá aún más con una disminución de la temperatura y bajará con un aumento de la temperatura.
A medida que la batería se descarga, el ácido sulfúrico se agota y el electrolito se convierte gradualmente en agua. Esta acción proporciona una guía para determinar el estado de descarga de la celda de plomo-ácido. El electrolito que se coloca en una batería de plomo-ácido tiene una gravedad específica de 1,280.
La gravedad específica de un electrolito es en realidad una medida de su densidad. El electrolito se vuelve menos denso a medida que aumenta su temperatura, y una temperatura baja significa una gravedad específica alta. El hidrómetro que usted utiliza está marcado para leer una densidad relativa a 80°F (26,67°C) solamente. En condiciones normales, la temperatura de su electrolito no variará mucho de esta marca. Sin embargo, los cambios grandes de temperatura requieren una corrección en su lectura.

Por cada cambio de 10°F grados en la temperatura por encima de 80°F, debe agregar 0,004 a su lectura de gravedad específica. Por cada cambio de 10 grados en la temperatura por debajo de 80°F, se debe restar 0.004 de su lectura de gravedad específica. Supongamos que acaba de tomar la lectura de gravedad de una celda. El hidrómetro indica 1.280. Un termómetro en la celda indica una temperatura del electrolito de 60ºF (15,56ºC). Esta es una diferencia normal de 20 grados respecto a la normal de 80°F. Para lograr la lectura verdadera de gravedad, debe restar 0,008 de 1,280. Así, el peso específico de la celda es en realidad 1,272. Una tabla de conversión de hidrómetro similar a la mostrada en la figura 2-4 se encuentra generalmente en el hidrómetro. A partir de la misma, se puede obtener la corrección de la gravedad específica para cambios de temperatura por encima o por debajo de 80°F.
TEORÍA DE LA CELDA
Una celda de plomo-ácido trabaja por un principio simple: cuando dos metales diferentes se sumergen en una solución ácida, una reacción química crea una presión eléctrica.
Un metal es de color marrón de dióxido de plomo (Pb02). Tiene una carga eléctrica positiva. El otro metal es esponja de plomo color gris (Pb). Tiene una carga eléctrica negativa. La solución de ácido es una mezcla de ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) y agua (H20). Se llama electrolito.
Si un conductor y una carga se conectan entre los dos metales, la corriente fluirá. Esta descarga continuará hasta que los metales se hagan iguales, y el ácido se agote. La acción puede ser revertida mediante el envío de corriente en la celda en la dirección opuesta. Esta carga continuará hasta que los materiales celulares sean restaurados a su condición original.
Reacción electroquímica
Una batería de plomo-ácido puede ser parcialmente descargada y recargada varias veces. Hay cuatro etapas en este ciclo de descarga / carga.
1. Carga: Una batería completamente cargada contiene una placa negativa de esponja de plomo (Pb), una placa positiva de dióxido de plomo (Pb02), y el electrolito de ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) y agua (H20).
2. Descarga: A medida que la batería se está descargando, el electrolito se diluye y las placas van sulfatando. El electrolito se separa en hidrógeno (H2) y sulfato (S04). El hidrógeno (H2) se combina con el oxígeno (0) de la placa positiva para formar más agua (H20). El sulfato se combina con el plomo (Pb) en ambas placas para formar sulfato de plomo (PbS04)
3. Descargada: En una batería completamente descargada, ambas placas están cubiertas con sulfato de plomo (PbS04) y el electrolito se diluye en su mayor parte en agua (H20).
4. Carga: Durante la carga, la acción química se invierte. El sulfato (S04) sale de las placas y se combina con el hidrógeno (H2) para convertirse en ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4). El oxígeno libre (02) se combina con el plomo (Pb) en la placa positiva para formar dióxido de plomo (Pb02).
La gasificación se produce cuando la batería se acerca a la carga completa, y burbujas de hidrógeno se desprenden en las placas negativas, y oxígeno en el positivo.
